Names of the Dead

Dr. Michael E. Carter

53, Stone Mountain, GA

David Carter writes:

My father, Dr. Michael E. Carter, and I had our problems with each other, and there was something of a rift between us, but we both wanted to change that, and now we never will. In October 2008, my father died of a heart attack on the first day of his vacation. I believe this heart attack could have been prevented if my father had been covered by an insurance company, but because he had diabetes, his preexisting condition made it impossible to get coverage. Even if there was a plan out there that would have accepted him, I doubt he could have afforded it. As a result, he didn't get the care that might have caught his heart disease in time to do something about it, in time to prevent his heart attack. Because of the health insurance companies, I lost my father, a man I barely got the chance to know.
