Fran was an RN, overweight, and unable to get health insurance. She was well aware of the need for insurance and had been insured until she and her husband divorced. She had two teenage children she was trying to raise. Fran became short of breath and went to the ER in Long Beach. They explained they couldn't care for her without insurance according to the Calif hospital system and she was sent to Martin Luther King Hospital where people without insurance were being sent for care. MLK Hospital was, and always is, overwhelmed with uninsured people. Fran died in the ER there after many hours without care.
