My Brother had adult-onset diabetes - he was without health insurance for some years before moving to Florida & gaining employment with Disney. He had quad-bypass surgery a few years before he died from complications of his diabetes. During the post-bypass time he wasn't able to work nearly as much as he wanted to &, thanks to Disney, he was able to keep his job (and his health insurance). His remaining few years were so much better because he luckily had a great employer who stuck with him through thick & thin. Scary to think he was one great employer away from having no health insurance at all for his last few years. Scary to say the least!
