Names of the Dead

Ron Hills

27, Portland, Oregon

Michael Stout writes:

Ron was in a car accident and suffered major head trauma. He was in intensive care where they removed his to skull bone to allow for brain swelling. He was in a coma for a few days and came to with obvious brain damage. He was in intensive care for a total of five days and obviously recovering when the insurance company contacted my daughter an told here that Ron had to be moved to a after care facility. Ron's doctors were totally against the move, but again my Daughter was told she would have to pay for a continued stay in intensive care or the hospital. She did not have the money so she agreed to the move for Ron. - - After Ron was moved I flew to Oregon to see him. He was awake, recognized me, but still could not talk. His skull cap was still off and he had a breathing tube. Ron grew up in Alaska and loved to fish so I brought him a Field and Stream that he looked at and had me look at the fish pictures by pointing. It was obvious that Ron was recovering. - - Upon leaving the care facility I noticed that state of the facility. They had a dog roaming the halls as well as in and out of the patients rooms. When my daughter attempted to ring for a nurse, it took over 20 minutes until one respond. The facility was far from hospital clean. - - I had to fly back and about a week later my Daughter called and said the due to the poor care of the facility, Ron had gotten a staff infection from the breathing tube. She said that the facility did not adhere to the tubes remove and cleaning schedule. She had complained about it several times and was told to remove it and clean it herself. Her not being a nurse, she did not know anything about the process and couldn't. The staff infection went directly into Ron's brain and caused more brane damage that put him back into coma. He remained a coma for two weeks, when my Daughter was again contacted by the insurance company. This time they told her she had to make the decessision to remove Ron's feeding tube or pay the remainder of the bill herself.
