Several months before Sheryl was laid off from her job as a school bus driver, she discovered a lump in her breast. She knew five months in advance that she would be laid off (as we all did) and knew she would be unable to afford COBRA. She decided to wait until she could get a job with the new bus company which had taken over, and until she was covered under their insurance, before seeking treatment. That way she could avoid the possibility of being denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition. It is my opinion that the extra 7 months she waited probably made the difference between life and death for her - she died after a long battle with breast cancer. She had been a major influence in my daughter's life, helping raise her from the age of 3 to 11.
