Jerry Turchanik writes:
My sister Denice Turchanik was denied heath insurance through my brother in-laws heath insurance (self employed). She had a blood clotting disorder (Mild hemophilia), pre-existing condition. Six years ago Christmas eve she found a lump under her arm pit. She knew what it was, before becoming a homemaker 17 years prior she was a registered nurse. Unfortunately, she had no heath insurance. She bought a high priced Blue Cross Blue Shield policy that would cover her with the blood disorder. Had a 90 day effective date that she had to wait for the insurance to kick in. 90 days later as soon as the coverage was effective she went to the doctor and was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. End of August of that year she received a letter from Blue Cross Blue Shield denying coverage of her breast cancer. They assumed that because it was so far advanced she had the cancer prior to the policy being issued and deemed it a pre-existing condition. She died 2 weeks later at home. My brother in-law declared bankruptcy... 2 years later my nephew Joshua (her son) took his life with a 9mm handgun. He was 19 years old. He never did got over his Mom's death. In this case, no Heath Insurance destroyed a whole family! I've always wondered what her medical out come may have been she had health insurance on the day she found the lump and was able to receive prompt treatment.
