My father, WW11 and Korean War survivor did not survive healthcare American style. He was unable to afford, nor would he have been able to afford healthcare due to a heart problem, used to Veteran's healthcare as he felt he was due this perk as you will. He was operated on at a Veteran's hospital for an arotic anyerism (sp). The operation went well. He suffered terribly from vomiting following this operation. Finallly, being a layperson,,I asked the attendent,,isn't there something you can give him? Yes the nurse answered,,but he has to ask for it,,,Excuse me,,,my father who is all but unconciese(sp),,who has just had open heart surgery, has to have the wherewithall to ask you for medication that would keep him from throwing his guts up???? My father was released,,,he was having trouble breathing when he went for one of his follow up visits,,they sent him home because his doctor or information was unavaiable. I have since learned how insane this was, and my father did not take an ambulance to the hospital,,I believe because he knew it would cost him his home. My father was very bright about most things, but not about these things,,just a small town boy sent off to war, work hard everyday and do the best he could. Lessons so many of our trusted law makers could learn from. My Father survived two wars,, yet he could not afford to see a doctor that had kept him alive for many years out of fear of not having a little something to hang onto and pass on to his child. My daughter who has good insurance still today cannot afford to see the doctors she needs to because the co-pay will put her family in straits,,,this is a story I hear all the time. Two of my Aunts died with the American healthcare system mostly to blame. The stories go on,thank you Senator for stating the facts,, some of your piers appear to be clueless.
