Names of the Dead

Cristina Orta

65, Apopka, FL

Cristina Caraballo-Negron writes:

I applaud you for putting this site up. My mother???s death is still fresh in my head and I blame the system for looking away for individuals whom are citizens of the United States and cannot afford insurance. I had taken my mother to several clinics where they assist based on income however, the care these clinics provide are as if these individuals with low income are a nuisance to society. My mother after having blood work done refused in going back to the clinic because of the way she was treated. She was belittled and treated unethically. We attempted in getting my mother health insurance through the government system but was denied because she was not 65 years of age. When my mother turned 65 (2008) she had finally been approved for Medicaid but then in August 2008 she went to the hospital with stomach pain but was sent home with no diagnosis. In September 2008, an ambulance had to be called since the pain was severe the hospital decided to do a CT scan where my mother was then diagnosed with cancer. To make this long story short in November 27, 2008, my mother passed away from colon cancer. This was something no one ever expected because my mother was a strong woman and seemed healthy. Till the last day of her breath my mother fought the cancer in hopes that she would win the disease. This is something that has traumatized me for life because I had to see my mother die in front of my eyes for the simple fact that if she had insurance she could have lasted many years with us. She left at a young age, leaving me and my brothers to observe the stages of death. It was and still is a horrible experience and I hold responsible the administration for forgetting those that are less fortunate.
